“Atl Atl” An uncommon sense element | English, The Vulgate
Print

Have you ever heard of this ‘atl atl’ thing?  I hadn’t until one of our colleagues/ class members mentioned it.  She had taken a prize in an ‘atl atl’ competition when just a girl.  As I recall, it was a Boy Scout competition; therefore, we have several things unusual about this story including the seldom seen combination of letters.  It may not seem quite so unusual in 2017, but the competition was prior to the 1960s, a decade when females were again demanding equality of rights.  Historical context is essential to all of human beings and doings.  An atl atl contest is a spear throwing competition using a tool for getting more from a spear throw. The spear is set in a sling which is placed round the spear-chucker’s wrist. This sling or ‘atl atl’ gives extra impetus to the spear, giving it a greater range and likely a greater impact. I have no personal knowledge of this tool, only hearsay.

This is another one of the many occasions in which understanding the indwelling sense of the word gives a grasp of the greater purpose involved. as  well as a grasp of fundamental principles which have many possible applications.

April 7, 2017, I did a posting on another unusual sense element, ‘atr’.  I used that posting to demonstrate the process of investigating sense elements and to show how we can learn more about our world (including ourselves) by looking more deeply into our language.  I’m quite certain ‘atl’ was on my mind when I took note of ‘atr’.  There are many languages and words which conflate the sound of ‘L’ and ‘R’.  They are not the same sense  -no matter how close the sounds. Truth be told, I suspect that I confused the two sense elements.

I’ve done several postings about how we came by the sense in our words.  The peoples’ languages are many and they may not have all of the same elements.  English does have a wealth of them as English is not the least bit shy about borrowing words and welcoming them into the tribes.  There are also good arguments to be made for English having initially been at least four languages.  We are taking English from where I first starting working with it and then learned how little we know about the real origins of our language.  Over a thousand years of missing history is quite a stretch of Mans concept of ‘time’. I’m striving to fill in missing bits and bites of the histories. It might help me to have a linguistic atl atl.

Whether one is using the spear as a weapon or is using it to claim ‘ownership’ of an expanse of land, that atl atl impetus gives considerable advantage.  ‘Sense’ does not become obsolete because our customs and practices do.  If we lose a sense element, we lose the use of that knowledge.  Sense elements reference broader principles of Nature due to the runes referencing the fundamental principles.  Since all territories of Nature have varying traits, there is always likely to be found a new variant.

I’ve been pondering this sense element since Ellen mentioned it. That is likely why I even noticed the ‘atr’ in the word atrocious.  This morning I was reading about a neurological condition that is becoming almost epidemic.  If we recognized every expression of the condition, it would probably already constitute an epidemic.  Causalgia, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, CRPS, PTSD, asf.  However, when any thing has this many names, we have no way of narrowing the topic to what we are talking about. This digression is for the purpose of emphasizing the importance of isolating a common sense element. It helps us to get a mental focus. I had not realized this until I started cleaning up this posting of all the digressions.

The digressions were a kind of map of the thought-process territory,  That territory can become a real slum, a wilderness of incipient thoughts and undeveloped ideas… unless the related and relevant ideas are triggered by a related sense code.

I was reading descriptions about the distribution of the Autonomic Nervous System.  More accurately, I was reading about the many symptoms and areas affected.  I’ve already given up on trying to explain my experiences of it with the “medical terminology” we  presently use.  I reflected on the “Artistic Anatomy” charts I’ve been using to diagram the various symptoms and their distributions.

This called to mind the frequently referenced illustration by Leonardo da Vinci.  He depicts Man as the center of a compass-like sketch. This sketch is such a classic illustration that many don’t realize where it came from. That Da Vinci illustration has become a kind of sense element representing Man.  At least, to me it has come to have that sense.  I plugged that picture into the idea that I was working to nail down with words.  Again, it is starting to sound as though my Mind has slipped the leash and is running wildly around the neighborhood.  The Mind often has to run a bit wild to find the missing related ideas.  Our Minds work poetically with relationships among our various experiences and the ideas which they both reference and evoke.  When I got the da Vinci image, I thought of ‘atlas to axis’. That is the spot at the base of our skull

This took me to Atlantis, Atlantic, Atlas:  Now, Atlas, according to Ovid’s “Metamorphoses” is a mountain, and also a personified son of Iapetos, also the father of the Pleiades. If there is an alternate spelling, Iapetus is one of the Titans, the children of Heaven and Earth, (Uranos and Gaia). This makes Atlas one of the Titans.   This is a word now most often associated with the phrase “Titans of Industry”.

Notice how ancient is the practice of giving ‘God’ a man-like visage.  Also, Man has often been given alternate forms in Nature. Our language has always been poetic. Why should anyone be surprised, this is classic language imagery.  There are various stories about Atlas, the one I’ve heard most often is that the man Atlas was punished and made to hold Earth up for eternity. (You have likely heard of “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand.)  That image depicts the negative flip side of God as Man. -Man as God gets rather petty and nasty. It’s time to decline Atlas runically to find out what principle is  being depicted.

Atlas declined runically: At is a positional relationship, ‘L’ is Lagu law, fluidity, change.  The grammatical suffix -as represents the Ash tree, parallelism. I see some redundancy already in that the Ash tree is often depicted as Yggdrasil, the mythical tree supporting Heaven and Earth. The word Atlas declined is a positional relationship of law, fluidity, change, which is parallel. It reads as though Earth’s support has two which are parallel. The construct of Earth sets a pattern for the creatures of Earth.  We are the closest to the tree without being one. Like Earth, we also have meridians. We are predominantly salt water. We already call the support of our head, the Atlas. However, we have an entire operating system which is incapable of being studied other than with the active participation and cooperation of the wearer.  It can’t be known otherwise -only speculated upon.

This sounds as if Man, like Earth, also has a duplicate pole. Earth has both a geographic and a magnetic pole, The rune which is descriptive of Earths pole is Gar which means spear.  Translated runically, GAR is Gyfu and AR for a New Order. When we decline AR we get oak transformed. I just did a posting on ‘By What Authority?’, September 12, 2017, about how we claim the territory of ‘Auth’ when we take on the responsibility of it.  AU is Oak Energy. Authority for anything comes from doing the required work.

The ‘root’ or sense element ‘auto’ refers to ‘self’.  The English word ‘self’ refers to our inner elf.  In the language of the Northern tribes the inner elf was like a guardian angel which we were given at birth.

When I started this posting, I reflected on how few words we have with atl. It finally came to me the enormous potential of just the word ‘Atlas’ when used to describe a type of book.  To better understand a language I would rather have an Atlas of English than an English Dictionary since an atlas would describe parallels in sense.  In this posting I did not over-explain the poetry of English, as it seemed to be speaking for itself.  And, it was doing a remarkably good job being clear about what it was saying.09-25-2017JOH
